UGC Sponsored National Conference on “INNOVATIVE INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS IN THE DIGITAL AGE (NCLC-2014)”

Report of the conference

Introduction
Today’s knowledge driven digital age is defined by the amount of information used, by the means of technology, powered by human creativity. In this context, libraries and librarians need to understand the nature of information, its use by the users. Library and information professionals take on many challenges in serving the needs of their clientele that constitutes both information haves and have-not’s. The modern day information professionals inspire their clientele by not only providing required information, but also through their interpersonal skills such as time management, comprehending, right information in the right context in the right time in the right format. Gone are the days where in the LIS professionals provide the source and leave the user to decide upon how and what’s of use. Now, it is more challenging on part of LIS professionals to provide the contextualized information but also manage iterations (more refined information every time).
As today’s decision makers are taking decisions based on 30% of the available information, 30% based on seniority, experience and the rest 40% is based on the gut-feeling… if a LIS professionals make the first 30% of the available information to anything more than that is a bonus and the direct impact can be seen based on the decisions made… called “more and informed decisions”. So, every LIS professional needs to not only work on improving the domain knowledge, knowledge of sources, implementing new and innovative services, but also needs to work on batter personality development skills, to name few are Communication skills, people management, financial management, negotiation skills, time and crisis management, service management, counseling techniques, oral/written/presentation skills and so on.. we all have studied and practicing that the LIS professional must be a teacher, philosopher, guide, friend and so on. But, the need of the hour is much more than what it is.. and we (LIS professionals) need to constantly upgrade our skills, knowledge, up-our-service levels, continued satisfaction levels among users, zeal for the client’s WOW factor and many more with shrinking budgets and manpower. The other challenge we face on part of LIS professional is the lack of self motivation and seeing the big picture and acting towards realizing that big picture. This conference has provided such an opportunity where-in young professionals suitably guided by seniors professionals.
It is good recall the books we issue to our users but we also need to read are Mr. Narayanamurthy’s “BETTER INDIA, BETTER WORLD”,Ron Caufmann’s “UP YOUR SERVICE” and Jaideep Prabhu’s “JUGAD INNOVATION”,wherein we can get a lot of clues as to how we can be “innovative” in our jobs we do and how to constantly keep our customer satisfaction levels high using innovative services. The problem lies in us, where we provide a lot of information (books, journals and the like), but we need to try and adopt what we have read.
