The Open Knowledge Conference 2027 (OKC 2027) is now accepting applications for scholarships and program proposals. 

Organised by the Open Knowledge Initiatives (OKI) at IIIT Hyderabad, the conference brings together contributors from across the open knowledge ecosystem to engage with the theme: Who Builds the Commons? Capacity, Contribution, and Governance for Open Knowledge Communities.

Work, Machines, and Who Decides: Story Pitch Opportunity for Young Adults in India Call for Stories: Work, AI and the Future

 Digital Futures Lab and Youth Ki Awaaz, supported by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, invite young adults from across India to share their stories about the future of work in an India shaped by artificial intelligence.

The initiative invites stories set in the future, near or far, exploring how work is found, done, valued, lost, refused, or reinvented in a world increasingly shaped by AI and technology.

Who Can Apply?

Young adults aged 18–29 from across India are invited to submit their stories.

First-time writers are welcome.

You do not need to be an established writer to participate.

What Kind of Stories Are Invited?

Stories can draw on your own life and experiences, pushed forward in time, or on work you observe around you.

Possible story themes include:

• Being scored or evaluated by a machine
• Freelancing against AI that can perform the work of several people
• A parent's job being transformed by technology
• A local shop changing because of AI
• A delivery rider affected by technology
• A security guard's work being transformed by automation
• How people find and perform work in an AI-driven future
• How technology changes the value of human labour
• Work being lost, refused or reinvented because of AI

Participants are encouraged to use their experiences or observations as the basis for their story, rather than making general statements about AI.

Submission Details

Story Pitch: 300–500 words

Language: English or Hindi

Eligibility: Young adults aged 18–29 from India

Number of Submissions: One submission per person

Fee: No submission fee

Experience: First-time writers welcome

Call for Applications: Joint Scholarship Programme of South Asia Institute Heidelberg University and Max Weber Forum Delhi – Summer 2027

 The South Asia Institute (SAI), Heidelberg University, in cooperation with the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies Delhi (MWF Delhi), invites applications for a up to three-month fellowship for young researchers from South Asia to be spent at the South Asia Institute in Heidelberg in summer 2027.

The fellowship is intended for young researchers from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh who wish to establish and develop a research collaboration with the South Asia Institute.

Fellowship Period

The fellowship is scheduled to begin between April and June 2027 and runs for a period of three months.

The place of residence during the fellowship will be Heidelberg, Germany.

Purpose of the Fellowship

During the stay, a research project previously defined in the application is to be taken up and developed into a third-party funding application.

The application can be aimed at acquiring:

• Research funding
• Research exchange programmes
• Academic exchange programmes
• Event programmes

Fellows are also expected to actively participate in scientific events at the South Asia Institute during their stay.

Fields of Research

Applications are particularly encouraged from researchers working in areas including:

• Ethnology
• History
• Political Science
• Economics
• Geography
• Modern Languages and Literatures of South Asia
• Cultural and Religious History of South Asia
• Classical Indology

Fellowship Benefits

The fellowship includes:

• International travel expenses: Reimbursement of up to EUR 1,500
• Rental costs: Payment of rental costs
• Monthly scholarship: EUR 1,200 per month
• Duration: Up to three months

Eligibility

The fellowship is aimed at young researchers from:

India | Nepal | Pakistan | Sri Lanka | Bangladesh

Applicants should wish to establish and develop a research collaboration with the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University.

Application Documents

According to the official announcement, applicants are required to submit an online application with the following documents:

1. Short cover letter – maximum 1 page
2. Curriculum vitae – maximum 2 pages, including the top ten publications
3. Copy of doctoral certificate
4. Project description using the prescribed template
5. List of two referees who may be contacted later
6. Letter of Reference by an SAI member – optional

The application documents should be uploaded as a single PDF through the online application form.

Selection is expected to take place by the end of 2026.

Call for Applications – Rapid Grants | Endangered Language Documentation

 ELDP is excited to introduce Rapid Grants, a new funding opportunity supporting people worldwide to document endangered languages. Rapid Grants support short-term, exploratory fieldwork with the goal to apply for a language documentation grant with ELDP.

Applications are invited for focused work on endangered languages in regions where endangered languages are likely spoken or signed.

Rapid Grants Are Designed for Projects

Rapid Grants are designed for projects:

• Assessing the viability of a documentation initiative
• Initiating engagement with a language community
• Collecting preliminary data (e.g. word lists) to clarify a language’s status and/or genealogical classification

Funding and Timeline

Rapid Grants are awarded directly to individuals; no host institution is required. Funded are fieldwork expenses for an exploratory short project.

• Maximum award: €5,000
• Maximum duration: 6 months
• Submission: Rolling submissions (apply anytime)
• Decision: Typically within six weeks

Eligibility

Applicants of any nationality may apply for projects worldwide.

Applicants should have relevant experience in language documentation, fieldwork, or an appropriate academic background.

Prior work (if any) will be evaluated, including evidence of responsible archiving and accessibility of collected materials.

What We Don’t Fund

• Proposals that do not demonstrate the potential to be developed into a subsequent language documentation project.
• Projects whose primary objective is not language documentation but data collection for MA or BA thesis.
• Continuation of an already ongoing project or repeat visits to previously funded field sites.
• Fieldwork with communities where the language is not considered endangered.

Archiving Digital Information: Preserving Knowledge for the Future

 One meaningful initiative I helped make happen on campus was promoting awareness about archiving and preserving digital information.

In today’s digital environment, valuable academic and institutional information is created every day, but digital information can easily be lost, scattered, or become inaccessible over time. I helped create awareness about the importance of systematically preserving digital documents, photographs, records, and other valuable information for future access.

Through this initiative, I encouraged students and the campus community to think beyond simply creating and storing digital information—to also consider its long-term preservation, organization, accessibility, and responsible use.

I believe digital archiving is not just about storing files; it is about preserving knowledge, history, and institutional memory for future generations.

In my video, I share how we can approach digital information archiving and why it matters in an increasingly digital world.
