Swami & Friends - Malgudi Days - Tamil - Episode 1

Like all children, Swami hates going to school on Mondays. But like it or not, he had to be there at the Albert Mission School every morning. The teachers are a mixed lot - the fiery -- eyed Vednagyam, the kind D. Pillai, the cantankerous Ebnezer and the rest, all firm believers of the adage, 'spare the rod and spoil the child'. Then there are Swami's delightful friends -- Samuel the pea, the hot -- blooded Mani, and the resourceful Rajam. Together they go through exam fever, cricket -- craze, games in the blazing noon, and afternoon 'tiffin'. Swami's strict father can usually see through all his excuses to escape school, but Swami has staunch support from his mother and grandmother. Swami has a knack for getting into scraps, and, when in a fit of passion he snatches the headmaster's cane and throws it out, there seems no way out but to run away from home. Later, lost in a frightening forest, Swami realizes his folly, but is it too late or will Swami return in time for the MCC (Malgudi Cricket Club) match. Swami & Friends is a delightful collage of stories, unpretentious and extremely charming.

Episode : 1

This is the story of 'Swamy' a eleven year old boy who takes us back to our childhood.

Swamy is the son of a traditional Hindu Lawyer -- W. T. Srinivasan. Swamy is studying in First form in a Mission school. He was insulted by his friends Somu, Shankar & Mani for taking the matter to his father about twisting of his ears by Christian Scripture teacher as Swamy protests against the insulting reference to the Hindu religion made by his teacher.

Rajam, a new comer, son of Deputy Superintendent of Police joins the Mission school. Everybody admires Rajam as he is a brilliant student and well dressed, self confident and above all is the son of D.S.P. But Mani hates Rajam and he wants to humble him but later become friends.

Swami and Friends revolves around the everyday life of ten-year old Swaminathan, or Swami as he is known by other characters. Swami portrays the growing up pangs of a boy who despises school, as he makes excuses and roams around Malgudi with his friends. Swami's father works in a government office and his mother is a housewife. At home, Swami shares his adventures with his aged granny, who lovingly addresses him as "Chamy." Swami also has two close friends: Mani and the son of the Police Chief Superintendent, Rajam. Swami's character was portrayed by Manjunath, a regular actor in many of Shankar Nag's productions.
