ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad, is a premier Indian research institute dedicated to basic and strategic research on millet crops and plays an important role in strengthening agriculture, nutrition, and sustainable food systems.
Established through a journey that began with PIRCOM in 1958 and the National Research Centre for Sorghum in 1987, IIMR became a full-fledged institute covering millet crops in 2014.
On March 18, 2023, IIMR was dedicated to the nation as the Global Centre of Excellence on Millets (Shree Anna), creating a stronger platform for sharing millet research, technologies, knowledge, and best practices globally.
IIMR has two regional centres—the Centre for Rabi Sorghum at Solapur, Maharashtra, and the Pearl Millet Research Station at Gudamalani, Barmer, Rajasthan.
ICAR-IIMR and Millet Research in India
The institute works on millet research, crop improvement, sustainable agriculture, processing, nutrition, value addition, and innovative technologies that can benefit farmers and consumers.
Millets also have growing relevance to organic farming and sustainable agriculture, offering opportunities to explore resilient cropping systems and environmentally conscious food production.
Nutrihub and Millet Entrepreneurship
Through Nutrihub, IIMR supports millet startups and entrepreneurs by encouraging innovation, incubation, technology development, mentoring, and opportunities across the millet value chain.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, millet processing, healthy food products, value-added foods, and other innovations can create promising agribusiness opportunities.
As interest in nutritious foods continues to grow, the connection between millet research, agriculture, health, organic farming, and agribusiness can help create new opportunities for farmers, innovators, startups, and consumers.
ICAR-IIMR and Nutrihub are helping build a stronger millet ecosystem where research, innovation, entrepreneurship, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture come together to advance the future of Shree Anna.
