An Automated Manual Transmission seems to be the theme of the Auto Expo 2014, as M&M is reportedly showcasing an AMT version of the Quanto at the upcoming event, according to a report on Cartoq.
M&M’s attempts at using an automatic gearbox have been restricted to the Scorpio SUV. If the reports are true, this would be the first AMT from M&M. The Quanto is likely to retain the 1.5 liter, three-cylinder diesel engine that outputs 98.6 Bhp of peak power and 240 Nm of peak torque.
The Quanto will remain a rear-wheel driven mini-SUV even with the AMT. Even though the Quanto is a sub-4meter SUV, it hasn’t exactly set the sales charts on fire as sales have been dropping constantly since its launch.
M&M recently launched the Quanto with “Yoga Seats” or seats that should have come by default considering how the flat rear bench and almost unusable jump seats are easily the Quanto’s biggest drawbacks.
The Quanto has sold very little in number, with sales from June-December 2013 peaking at 500 units in October. The AMT on the Quanto could be a precursor to M&M fitting this system to more of its cars.
