வடசென்னைப் பகுதியில் கடனாளிகளை அடைத்து வைக்கும் ஒரு சிறை இருந்தது? உங்களுக்குத் தெரியுமா?

பழமையான வடசென்னைப் பகுதியில், நம்மில் பலருக்குத் தெரியாத ஒரு வரலாற்றுச் சின்னம் உள்ளது. அது தான் பழைய கடனாளிகள் சிறை (OLD – CIVIL DEBTOR'S JAIL). இந்த அரிய கட்டிடத்தின் கதை பலருக்கும் தெரியாமல் இருக்கலாம். அதன் சுவாரசியமான வரலாற்றைப் பற்றி அறிந்து கொள்வோம்.

1692-ல் கட்டப்பட்ட இந்தச் சிறை, கடன் வாங்கி திருப்பிச் செலுத்த முடியாதவர்களை அடைக்கும் இடமாக இருந்துள்ளது. அக்காலத்தில் கடன் வாங்குவது ஒரு பெரும் ஆபத்தான செயல் என்பதை இது காட்டுகிறது.

1793-ல் இந்த வளாகம் விரிவடைந்து, இன்று நாம் அனைவரும் அறியும் பாரதி மகளிர் கல்லூரியின் ஒரு பகுதியாக மாறியுள்ளது.

சுதந்திரத்திற்குப் பின், இந்தக் கட்டிடம் பல மாற்றங்களை அடைந்துள்ளது. முதலில் குடிசைத் தொழில் பயிற்சி மையமாகவும், பின்னர் மத்திய பாலிடெக்னிக் நிறுவனமாகவும் மாறியுள்ளது. 1964-ல் இது கலைக் கல்லூரியாக மாறி, இன்று பாரதி மகளிர் கல்லூரி என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

கல்லூரி வளாகத்தில் நிற்கும் சிதைந்த கட்டிடம், அதன் பழைய நாட்களின் நினைவூட்டலாக உள்ளது. உயர்ந்த கோட்டைச் சுவர்களுக்குள் அமைந்த நீண்ட கட்டிடம், அதன் தெற்குப் பக்கத்தில் உள்ள உயர்ந்த நுழைவாயில், படிக்கட்டுகள் - இவை அனைத்தும் அதன் முந்தைய பயன்பாட்டைக் காட்டுகின்றன.

சௌல்ட்ரி நீதிமன்றத்தில் தண்டிக்கப்பட்ட குற்றவாளிகள் இங்கு அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். கடுமையான குற்றவாளிகளுக்கான இருண்ட அறை, ஒரே ஒரு கழிவறை - இவை அனைத்தும் அந்தக் காலத்தின் கடுமையான சிறைச் சூழலை நமக்கு உணர்த்துகின்றன.

சுவாரசியமாக, 1964 முதல் 2004 வரை இதே அறைகள் கல்லூரி மாணவர்களுக்கு வகுப்பறைகளாகப் பயன்பட்டுள்ளன. ஒரு காலத்தில் கைதிகளை அடைத்து வைத்த இடம், பின்னர் அறிவைப் பரப்பும் இடமாக மாறியுள்ளது!

இன்றும் வடசென்னை மின்ட் பேருந்து நிலையத்தில் இருந்து பாரதி மகளிர் கல்லூரி வரை செல்லும் சாலை "பழைய சிறைச்சாலை சாலை" என்று பெயர்ப் பலகைகளில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

நண்பர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் சென்னை தின வாழ்த்துகள்!

சென்னையில் எனக்குப் பிடித்த நூலகங்களுள் ஒன்று உ.வே. சாமிநாதையர் நூலகம் (U.V. Swaminatha Iyer Library).

2007-ஆம் ஆண்டில் உ.வே. சாமிநாதையர் நூலகத்தில் உள்ள அரிய புத்தகங்களைப் பட்டியலிட்டு ஆவணப்படுத்தும் பணியில் இருந்தேன். பழமையான புத்தகங்களைக் கையாள்வது ஒரு கலை. நான் ஆவணப்படுத்திய ஒவ்வொரு புத்தகமும் இப்பொழுதும் நினைவில் நிழலாடுகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு புத்தகத்தின் தகவல்களும் வரலாற்றுக் காலத்திற்குள் சஞ்சரிக்க வைத்துவிடும்.

அங்கிருந்த பெரும்பாலான பழைய புத்தகங்கள் பூச்சிகளால் தாக்கப்பட்டு, தூசி படிந்திருந்தன. ஆவணப்படுத்துவதற்கு முன் அவற்றைச் சுத்தம் செய்ய வேண்டியிருந்தது. இப்புத்தகங்களைக் கையாளும்போது சுவாசக் கோளாறு, கண்களிலும் சருமத்திலும் எரிச்சல் போன்ற பல உபாதைகள் ஏற்பட்டன. எனினும், தமிழ்த் தாத்தா உ.வே. சாமிநாதையர் அவர்களின் கரங்களில் தவழ்ந்த புத்தகங்களை எனது கரங்களால் தொட்டு ஆவணப்படுத்துகிறோம் என்ற பெருமகிழ்வும், ஆவணப்படுத்துதலில் எனக்கிருந்த அளவற்ற ஆர்வமும் இச்சிரமங்களைப் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் செய்தன.

இந்நூலகத்தின் இயற்கை கொஞ்சும் சூழல் எப்பொழுதும் புத்துணர்ச்சி கொடுத்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கும். இங்கிருக்கும் கடற்கரை மணலில் வெறுங்காலில் நடப்பது ஒரு சுக அனுபவம். நூலகத்தின் உள்ளே இருந்த ஒரு மரத்தில் செழுமையான வெற்றிலைக் கொடி பசுமையாகப் படர்ந்திருக்கும், இங்கிருக்கும் மணலை லேசாகத் தோண்டினால் நன்னாரி வேர்கள் படர்ந்து இருக்கும், அவற்றை எடுத்து தண்ணீர் பாட்டிலில் போட்டு வைத்து அந்த தண்ணீரைக் குடிப்போம் அற்புத சுவையாக இருக்கும்.

பண்டைய இலக்கியங்கள் எழுதப்பட்டிருந்த ஓலைச்சுவடிகளை ஊர் ஊராக அலைந்து சேகரித்து அச்சிட்டுப் பதிப்பித்து தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் தொன்மையையும் செழுமையையும் அறியச் செய்தவர் தமிழ் தாத்தா உ. வே. சாமிநாதையர்.

இந்நூலகத்தில் புத்தகங்கள் மட்டுமின்றி செவ்வியல் இலக்கிய சுவடிகள் சமய இலக்கிய சுவடிகள், ராமாயண சுவடிகள் ஓவிய சுவடிகள், என மூவாயிரத்திற்கும் மேலான சுவடிகள் இங்கு பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. பதினெட்டாம் நூற்றாண்டு முதல் இன்று வரை உள்ள பல அரிய நூல்களின் சேமிப்பு கூடமாக இந்த நூலகம் விளங்குகிறது.
