How to Create a Blogger Header

One of the marvels of the free blogging platform Blogger is the ability to customize your blog's header. Rather than use Blogger's bland, default text header, you can create and install your own custom header that reflects your small business and draws attention to your business mission. Add a logo or your own stylized text with a few clicks of your mouse.

Create the Header

Step 1

Determine your blog's header size. Log in to your Blogger account and click the Options drop-down arrow on the right side of the page, between the orange "Pencil" icon and the "View blog" button. Select "Template," and then click the "Customize" button beneath your blog's thumbnail image. Click "Adjust widths." Look in the text box to the right of the "Entire blog" slider. Most default Blogger headers are 960 pixels wide.

Step 2

Launch Windows Paint. Click the "Select" button in the menu, and then click on "Rectangular Section." Click the rectangle shape in the "Shapes" box.

Step 3

Hold down the left mouse button and drag your cursor across the screen to create a rectangle. Look at the bottom of the Paint program to check the width and height of the rectangle you are creating. If it's too large or small, place the cursor over one side of the rectangle until a double-sided arrow cursor appears and drag until the width measures 960 pixels.

Step 4

Create your header using the Paint program features. To add background color, select a color from the menu bar, click the "Paint can" icon, then click the icon over the rectangle. To add a logo or other graphic image, click "Paste from" and select the image. Drag the image or resize it using your mouse cursor. To create text, click the "A" icon in the Tools section to select a font, font size and font color. Click the mouse cursor in the rectangle and type in your text.

Step 5 Save your header by clicking on the "File" icon and choosing "Save as" from the menu. Type a name for your header and save the file on your computer desktop.

Install the Header

Step 1

Log in to your Blogger account. Click the Options drop-down arrow on the right side of the page, between the orange "Pencil" icon and the "View blog" button. Select "Layout."

Step 2

Click the "Edit" link at the top of the layout interface on the box labeled "Header."

Step 3

Click "Browse" in the dialog window that opens. Locate your header image on your desktop and wait while Blogger uploads the header to your blog. Select the placement option "Instead of title and description" and click "Save."

Step 4

Click the "View Blog" text link to view your blog with the new header.
